Memorial Day Weekend

I love this picture for what it represents…  Asher and Jesse are starting to play together more and more.  Just today Asher asked when Jesse was getting up from his nap so they could play.  :)

Oh man, this picture… I feel like I must be looking at my husband as a little boy when I see this picture of Asher!

Memorial Day weekend is all about the Indy 500 where we live.  Though we’re on the north side of Indy we still get our piece of the action when the jets do their fly-over.  It is seriously one of my favorite things about spring here in Indy!  Last summer we had a stealth fly over as well.  It was SO cool!

My brother-in-law the airplane buff was able to identify the planes after I sent my sister these pictures.  Doesn’t “A-10 Warthog tank killer jets” sound even more impressive?  They flew over several times and Asher got so excited each time, running out to see them.

We spent the weekend up in Michigan and made a pit-stop in Upland for dinner at Ivanhoe’s with a TU friend who is near and dear to our heart… though not very near in location.  Luke’s wedding was the reason we took 6 month old Asher on an airplane to California!  Chris has seen Luke since then, but not me so it was fun to catch up.  I will say, nothing makes you feel old like hanging out at an old college spot with a toddler and baby in tow!

We couldn’t be THAT close to Taylor and not scoop the loop at least once!  I even dragged out the big camera to have a real picture (not an iPhone shot) of the boys and the bell tower.  :)  Don’t you love Jesse’s foot in the air so it won’t touch the grass?

We had this gorgeous sky as our view on our drive up to Michigan.  Nothing quite like an Indiana sunset… hmmm, something like that?!

We pulled in late and were up and at ‘em early the next morning for the breakfast of champions at Rykse’s.  It was Chris and the boys’ first time going and I can’t believe I didn’t take a picture of the cinnamon rolls!  I was half expecting and fully hoping to bump into the Kilian’s while we were there!!

Saturday was chilly and rainy which didn’t bother this guy since all he wanted to do was play with Nana and Papa.

…and PLAY they did!

Sunday was the HOT day and we headed to the beach (with everyone else)…

Asher is a total beach bum and hasn’t lost a single drop of his love for water since last summer.  We had to watch him closely as he showed NO FEAR.  :)

Jesse was a champ and spent much of his time in the shade.  He wasn’t too thrilled with having his toes dipped in the chilly waters of Lake Michigan.

Sadly this was the best I could do for a picture of the boys with the lighthouse.  There were just SO many people that by the end it was feeling pretty claustrophobic.  All in all a wonderful day at the beach!!

It was a fun weekend with family and perhaps it was the fighter jets that flew overhead or just the reminder that both our boys’ grandfathers served our country but thankfulness for our military was never far from my mind.  You can’t help but be thankful for the men and women who kept us safe and are still keeping us safe.  I can’t fathom the sacrifice our military families make and how hard it would be to sleep at night wondering if your loved one was okay.  We are blessed that there are still those who answer the call to protect our freedom.  May God bless them and their families.

Taylor Friends and a visit to Upland!

This past week we had a special visit from my (our) dear friend Heather Von Tobel. Heather, Chris, and I all had elementary education classes together at TU. Heath and I were fast friends after meeting in math for teachers freshman year and even lived together our first year out of college before I got married. We’ve been in each other’s weddings and shared so much over the years. I really appreciate the fact that she came to visit so soon after Asher was born so she could get to know our little guy. Heather spent lots of time cuddling and loving on Asher these past few days. Thanks for coming, Heath! We miss you already, and can’t wait for you and Pete to (hopefully) move back to Indiana soon!

Chris and I are both so thankful for our TU friends! I know we both look back on our days at Taylor as some of the best for what we learned, who we met (awesome friends and each other!), and how we grew in the Lord!

On Wednesday we drove Heather to Upland to meet her husband, Peter, at Ivanhoe’s! Ivanhoe’s is a TU tradition and is known for it’s milkshakes and sundaes. We just had to let Asher experience the magic of Ivanhoe’s. After dinner we decided to drive around the “loop” at TU for old time’s sake. We also got out and walked around a little bit as well.

Here is Chris in front of Wengatz Hall – where Asher will live if (when) he decides to attend TU!

Peter was also a Wengetz guy… you can really see the pride he still has for his Wengetz heritage.

Here is Heath and me in front of Olson Hall. Having also lived in English Asher can choose to either marry an English or an Olson girl, but I do believe there to be some truth to the belief that Olson girls have more fun.

Peter held Asher and Heather’s purse so we could take our girl picture. :) Asher loved meeting Heather and Pete!

Even though it was a quick visit it was fun to introduce Asher to Taylor! We’re excited to bring him back in the fall for Homecoming!
