Summertime Sewing!

I came across a sewing project for a beach towel dress/cover-up on this blog and I thought it was SO cute!  The only problem was I didn’t know how to shir (a.k.a. smock).  Up until now I hadn’t even been tempted to try it but this cover up made me want to learn!  Sooooo, I read a few SUPER helpful tutorials online (God bless the internet) and finally gave it a try.  It’s a really neat technique so I assumed it would be hard, but it truly wasn’t.  I will definitely try more shirring in the future.  I have also decided that as much as I LOVE having a son and would take 10 more boys I need at least one daughter so I can make a smocked dress for her.  ;)  Like this one… how cute!!smocked baby dress

Back to the cover-up… I found a towel at Wal-Mart for $4.00 and elastic thread for $1.27 so basically I made myself a beach cover-up for less than $6!!  I’m ALL SET for the cabin!

I was going to skip on the straps, but now I’m not so sure.  What do you think?  Straps or no straps? I’m being more than a little bit indecisive on this one!  :)

I’ll let you know what I decide and take a picture of the final product!

Here’s an up-close picture of my shirring for my mom’s viewing pleasure!  ;)  Can’t believe there is actually something about sewing I get to teach YOU, mom!!IMG_0075
